Speaking in an interview with the South American football federation on Thursday, the Italian manager acknowledged Neymar’s struggles with injury but emphasised that the Santos star remains key to Brazil’s chances on the global stage.

“He must prepare well and he has the time to do that,” Ancelotti said. “He’s a very important player for us regarding the World Cup.”

Neymar, now 33, extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos this week, committing to remain with the side until the end of the year. The forward, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 international goals, has endured a difficult run of form and fitness in recent years.

In the past five months, Neymar has managed just 12 matches for Santos, scoring three times. His absence was notable from Ancelotti’s first Brazil squad, announced at the end of May.

Despite missing their talisman, Brazil secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay earlier this month.

Injuries have been a recurring obstacle for Neymar, limiting his impact at both club and international levels. However, Ancelotti’s public backing signals a clear intention to reintegrate the forward into the national setup—if he can maintain fitness.

“Neymar remains central to Brazil’s ambitions. The door is open if he prepares properly,” a team insider said following the coach’s comments.

Ancelotti, known for his calm and pragmatic management style, is expected to build his team around a blend of youth and experience. Neymar, with his goalscoring record and big-game pedigree, remains a potential match-winner—if physically ready.
