Augsburg Bayern upset ends Munich’s 27-match unbeaten streak as Chaves and Massengo secure a dramatic 2-1 victory in Bundesliga action

Augsburg produced a stunning result on Saturday, defeating Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich 2-1 to end their 27-match unbeaten league run, a streak dating back to March.

Bayern had taken an early lead through Hiroki Ito’s header from a Michael Olise corner, but Augsburg responded with two second-half goals in quick succession.

Arthur Chaves capitalised on a mistake from Bayern’s backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig in the 76th minute to equalise, before Han-Noah Massengo finished a slick team move to put the visitors ahead.

Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich admitted the result was deserved. “We have to accept it — it wasn’t undeserved. It wasn’t like Augsburg dominated us, but a win for us would not have been deserved either,” he told Sky Germany.

“Augsburg were more aggressive towards the end. It wasn’t the top level we wanted to deliver, but what’s most crucial is how we react to it.”

The loss comes after Bayern had recorded the best opening half of a season in Bundesliga history, dropping only four points from 18 games. Augsburg, meanwhile, had not won since early December, making this victory in Munich their first since 2015.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen capitalised on Bayern’s loss, defeating Werder Bremen 1-0 thanks to a goal from Lucas Vazquez, snapping a three-game losing streak and moving up to sixth place.

Surprising Hoffenheim climbed closer to a top-four spot with a 3-1 comeback win at struggling Eintracht Frankfurt.

Despite Arnaud Kalimuendo putting Frankfurt ahead, Hoffenheim scored three times in 13 minutes in the second half, including an own goal by Aurele Amenda, securing third place, three points behind second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

RB Leipzig cruised past Heidenheim 3-0 with goals from Ridle Baku, Antonio Nusa, and captain David Raum to move into fourth, while Mainz continued their resurgence with a 3-1 win over Wolfsburg, collecting nine points from their past six games to reach the relegation playoff spot.

Bayern now face pressure to maintain their lead, as second-placed Dortmund could cut the gap to eight points with a win at Union Berlin later on Saturday.
