Bauchi school shutdown announced as the state closes all schools over rising security fears

The Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, on Sunday in Bauchi announced an immediate Bauchi school shutdown across all primary, secondary and tertiary institutions following heightened security concerns linked to recent attacks in northern Nigeria.

The decision was communicated through the Ministry of Education’s Information and Public Relations Officer, Jalaludeen Usman, who cited widespread threats to the safety of students and staff.

Usman said the directive was issued after extensive consultations with security agencies and other stakeholders. He noted that the government had been confronted with what he described as overwhelming concerns about the vulnerability of school communities.

He added that the state recognised the inconvenience the closure might cause but stressed that protecting children remained its highest moral responsibility.

In his statement, Usman appealed to parents, guardians and school proprietors to remain calm, assuring them that the government was working urgently to stabilise the situation.
He said authorities were maintaining close coordination with security operatives to ensure that academic activities could resume once safety was restored.

The ministry also urged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious behaviour, emphasising that timely information from the public was crucial to safeguarding communities. Usman pledged that the government would provide updates as developments unfolded.

The action follows a disturbing rise in abductions of secondary school students in Kebbi and Niger states, incidents that have intensified fears across the northern region.

The Federal Government had only days earlier ordered the temporary closure of 41 unity schools nationwide to guard against similar attacks, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

For many parents in Bauchi, the announcement signals both anxiety and relief, as the government attempts to prevent further harm while navigating one of the region’s most pressing security challenges.
