Police are investigating the unexpected death of a 33-year-old man at Charlton’s London stadium, with the Championship club assisting enquiries
Charlton Athletic Football Club is assisting the Metropolitan Police with an investigation after a 33-year-old man was found dead at The Valley stadium in south-east London on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following an incident believed to have occurred in the early hours of Monday.
The Championship club confirmed the death in a statement issued on Tuesday evening, saying the man was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called to the stadium.
The Metropolitan Police are treating the death as unexpected and have begun enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding it. Police have also notified the man’s next of kin.
Charlton said the Charlton Athletic death remained under investigation and appealed to anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference 2809/18AUG.
The club expressed its condolences to the man’s family, friends and loved ones at what it described as an incredibly difficult time.
“Everyone at Charlton Athletic would like to express their deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the individual’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” the club said.
The Addicks also confirmed that they would continue assisting authorities with their enquiries while asking the public to respect the privacy of those affected.
“There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of the club,” Charlton said.
Police were reportedly called to The Valley at about 11.15am on Tuesday following concerns for a person’s welfare.
The circumstances surrounding the death have not been fully established. Reports have indicated that investigators are examining whether the man may have fallen from a height, although enquiries remain ongoing and no definitive cause of death has been announced.
The incident occurred at a significant time for Charlton, whose home ground has been the centre of the club’s football operations for more than a century. The Valley has served as Charlton’s home since 1919, apart from periods when the club was forced to play elsewhere.
The club also thanked its staff for the professional manner in which they responded to what it described as a particularly difficult and distressing situation.
“Charlton Athletic would also like to thank its staff for the professionalism they have shown while dealing with a particularly difficult and distressing situation,” the club said.
The investigation remains active, with police seeking information that could help establish what happened in the hours before the man’s death.
The circumstances have also prompted the club to ask supporters and members of the public not to speculate while authorities work to establish the facts.
For the family and loved ones of the deceased, the focus now remains on understanding the circumstances of the death, while Charlton continues to support the police investigation.
