Chelsea and West Ham fined £325,000 and £300,000 after FA labels Stamford Bridge clash a “serious incident” involving multiple players

Chelsea Football Club and West Ham United have been fined £325,000 and £300,000 respectively following a “mass confrontation” during their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge in January.

The incident occurred in added time after Chelsea forward João Pedro reacted to a shove from West Ham winger Adama Traoré on Blues defender Marc Cucurella.

The situation escalated as players from both sides became involved in heated scenes. Referee Anthony Taylor dismissed West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo following a lengthy VAR review for grabbing João Pedro by the neck.

The Football Association stated on Wednesday that Chelsea had failed to ensure its players did not behave in an improper or provocative manner around the 95th minute, while West Ham had similarly failed to control its players’ conduct. Both clubs admitted the charges.

An independent regulatory commission described the flashpoint as a “serious incident” involving multiple Chelsea players.

The commission noted that Marc Cucurella “sought to invite a reaction” from Adama Traoré after conceding a corner kick, though this did not justify Traoré’s disproportionate response that sparked the confrontation.

The commission further observed that three Chelsea players were seen “in some way seeking to incite the crowd,” adding that such behaviour was unjustifiable.

While Todibo’s red card for violent conduct was upheld, the commission confirmed no other West Ham players committed violent acts, though a number acted improperly and provocatively, contributing to the “serious, unsightly incident.”

The FA took into account both clubs’ previous breaches of Rule E20.1, which prohibits behaviour that is “improper, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting or provocative,” when determining the fines.

The confrontation followed Chelsea’s dramatic comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2, with Enzo Fernández scoring an injury-time winner moments before tensions spilled over.
