NYSC encourages corps member performance monitoring with movement and attendant registers to boost accountability, discipline, and service impact in Nigeria

The National Youth Service Corps has called on corps employers to prioritise corps member performance monitoring in their workplaces. Employers have been advised to maintain movement and attendant registers to boost accountability and curb service evasion.

Chinwe Nwachuku, NYSC Gombe State Coordinator, made the call during a corps employers’ workshop held in Gombe. “If a corps member didn’t work for you, don’t give them a clearance letter. We must have movement and attendant registers to monitor corps members,” she said.

Ahmed Abdullahi, Head of Gombe Civil Service, also appealed to employers to improve welfare and create welcoming environments. “Even after providing them accommodations, visit them.

They will have a sense of belonging. The service is for a short period and the beginning of your life,” he remarked.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, NYSC Director-General, represented by Aishatu Adamu, criticised rising neglect by corps employers. He said this trend undermines the scheme’s purpose and leads to truancy, poor supervision, and reduced productivity.

“This workshop is a patriotic call to action. It is an opportunity to strengthen the long-standing partnership between NYSC and corps employers,” he noted.

Nafiu stressed that employers must provide basic welfare including accommodation, healthcare access, and timely documentation. He criticised reports of employers aiding service evasion and poor reporting.

Inspection visits, according to him, have revealed serious lapses. Many corps members are untraceable due to lack of proper housing and poor monitoring.

Former NYSC official Mailumo Abubakar urged a review of the posting policy, advocating for more rural deployment. Meanwhile, Principal Alhaji Magaji Abubakar emphasised better engagement and mentorship to bring out the best in corps members.

The NYSC hopes the outcome of the deliberations will reinforce service discipline and restore commitment among corps members across the country.
