Digital learning in Nigerian universities must grow through bold investment, policy, and partnerships to build a future-ready, inclusive, and empowered education system

Digital learning in Nigerian universities is at a critical turning point, according to Mr. Chris Maiyaki, Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Speaking at the maiden convocation of BUCODeL, Babcock University’s Centre for Open, Distance and e-Learning, Maiyaki called for urgent and sustained investment in digital infrastructure to empower education at all levels.

He noted that digital learning should not be a race for certificates, but a tool for national empowerment—producing digitally literate, employable citizens who contribute meaningfully to development.

Maiyaki stressed the need for a functional digital education policy and broader collaboration between universities, government, private sectors, and global partners to develop a cohesive digital learning ecosystem.

He emphasized that Nigeria must make digital learning accessible, especially to rural and underserved areas, to bridge the digital divide.

In his words, “Digital learning must not remain a luxury for urban elites. It must become a necessity for national transformation.”

Babcock University was praised for its visionary launch of BUCODeL. The centre, which began in 2021 with just 17 students, now serves over 440 learners across key disciplines.

According to Director Prof. Mobolanle Sotunsa, new programs in Nursing, Mass Communication, Public Health, and Education are also underway.

Prof. Ademola Tayo, the university’s Vice Chancellor, said that open and distance learning is vital to scaling education across Africa. By boosting literacy and flexibility, ODL can transform human capital and drive economic growth.

Sotunsa encouraged graduates to lead with courage: “Let your BUCODeL story be one of transformation and possibility.”

With digital learning in Nigerian universities gaining momentum, the message is clear: the future of education lies in bold ideas, inclusive access, and empowered learners.
