Damilola Balogun UNILAG Drowning Incident has sent shockwaves through the University of Lagos community, following confirmation that the 400-level student leader was swept away by strong ocean currents during a beach outing in Ibeju-Lekki.

Contrary to claims circulating online suggesting he drowned while attempting a backflip, findings by PUNCH Metro confirmed that Balogun, a student in the Department of Education, died after being pulled into deep waters at Akodo Beach in the Idado area.

Balogun had been attending a handover gathering with fellow executive members of the Nigerian Universities Education Students Association (NUESA), where he was recently elected president of the UNILAG chapter.

The event was meant to be celebratory; instead, it ended in heartbreak.

Sources at the beach said the group had stayed overnight and were relaxing when Balogun, following a football game, ventured towards the shoreline to take photos.

Despite warnings from the General Secretary about dangerous currents, Balogun insisted he wanted to “enjoy the village life a little longer.”

Witnesses recounted the harrowing moment when locals spotted him waving for help, but rescue attempts by divers were unsuccessful.

His body was recovered two days later at Museyo, across from the original location. He was buried that same day.

The Damilola Balogun UNILAG Drowning Incident has drawn emotional tributes from student organisations.

The Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students described him as “a beacon of hope” and “a fighter even in his final moments.”

In a statement, they praised his “genuine passion for service” and unwavering dedication to student welfare. “He was a leader with dreams as bright as dawn,” the message read.

UNILAG has yet to release an official statement, with spokesperson Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem declining immediate comment.

This tragic event echoes a similar 2022 incident at Elegushi Beach, where four teenagers drowned while celebrating the end of their secondary education.

It raises once again the issue of beach safety and the need for clear warnings and lifeguard presence, especially in known danger zones.

Balogun was due to begin his teaching practice the Monday after his death.

Instead of stepping into a classroom, he has become the subject of a heartfelt mourning across the university community — a stark reminder of life’s fragility and the ocean’s quiet danger.
