Delta State House of Assembly launches a probe into Delta State University’s alleged recruitment breach involving over 400 employments

Delta State University recruitment probe has been launched by the Delta State House of Assembly following allegations that the institution’s Governing Council and Management exceeded the Governor’s approved employment quota.

The probe stems from a petition filed by two citizens on behalf of the “Concerned Stakeholders of Delta State,” accusing the university of breaching due process and executive approval.

According to the petition, the Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, had authorised the recruitment of 100 new staff members in January 2024 to fill critical manpower gaps.

However, the petitioners alleged that the university’s management went ahead to employ over 400 persons—exceeding the approved number by more than 300.

Announcing the development during plenary, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Dennis Guwor, constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the claims.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, will chair the committee, while the Clerk of the House, Barr. Oto Aghoghopia, serves as Secretary. Five other members were also appointed to the committee.

The Speaker directed the team to conduct a comprehensive investigation and submit its report within three weeks.

Presenting the petition, the Chief Whip, Hon. Perkins Umukoro, reiterated that the alleged breach of the Governor’s directive undermines fiscal discipline, transparency, and the integrity of governance in the state.

The petitioners maintained that the recruitment exercise violated principles of accountability guiding public institutions and urged the Assembly to intervene.

“This petition is made in good faith and in the collective interest of the people of Delta State,” they stated. “We trust that the Delta State House of Assembly, as the representative arm of the people and guardian of accountability, will act swiftly to safeguard the integrity of governance in our state.”
