Goals from Julian Brandt and Nico Schlotterbeck, either side of halftime, sealed the win.

The result lifted third-placed Dortmund five points clear of fourth-placed Leverkusen.

Dortmund remain a point behind RB Leipzig in second but trail league leaders Bayern Munich by nine points after 13 matches.

Hoffenheim, who finished the previous season near relegation, entered the weekend in fourth place and created early chances.

Dortmund nearly took the lead after 20 minutes when Karim Adeyemi set up Serhou Guirassy, but the striker failed to convert.

The breakthrough came just before halftime. Right-back Yan Couto cut back a precise cross for Brandt to tap home.

Dortmund doubled their advantage 30 minutes from time as Schlotterbeck guided a shot through a crowded penalty area past Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Guirassy later had a chance to extend the lead but struck the crossbar. The 29-year-old striker has only scored once in the league since mid-September.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Hamburg claimed a 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen in Germany’s first top-flight Northern Derby since 2018.
