Egypt Nigeria AFCON friendly ends 2 to 1 in Cairo as Super Eagles suffer a setback ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations

Egypt defeated Nigeria 2 to 1 in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday, dealing the Super Eagles a sobering setback in their final warm-up ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ahmed Saber gave Egypt the lead in the 28th minute after winger Ahmed Sayed Zizo broke down the right flank and delivered a low cross, which the midfielder converted from close range.

Nigeria responded with renewed intensity and came close to an equaliser before the break.

Paul Onuachu tested goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy with a glancing header from Frank Onyeka’s long throw, forcing a sharp save.

The Super Eagles drew level in first-half stoppage time through Chidozie Awaziem.

A delayed free-kick from Zaidu Sanusi caused confusion in the Egyptian defence, allowing Awaziem to nod into an unguarded net.

Egypt regained control eight minutes after the restart when Mostafa Mohamed exploited a poorly coordinated Nigerian offside line.

The striker timed his run before firing past goalkeeper Amas Obasogie to restore the hosts’ advantage.

Nigeria pressed for another equaliser as the match progressed, showing greater energy and urgency.

However, Egypt’s defence remained disciplined and resolute, seeing out the contest to secure the victory.

The Egypt Nigeria AFCON friendly also marked the unofficial debut of midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro and goalkeeper Amas Obasogie for Nigeria.

Stanley Nwabali started despite concerns over wrist and ankle discomfort, while Frank Onyeka was handed a rare midfield start.

Several regulars were absent from the squad, with Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon yet to report to camp.

Nigeria will travel to Morocco on Thursday to begin full preparations for the tournament proper.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group C of AFCON 2025 alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, and will open their campaign against Tanzania on December 23 in Fez.
