ÈKÓ EnviroTalk launches 5-day summer boot camp to train Nigerian youths in green skills and sustainability leadership, backed by Lagos State and partners

Independent environmental NGO, ÈKÓ EnviroTalk, has flagged off its five-day summer boot camp aimed at educating Nigerian youths on environmental sustainability, green leadership, and climate advocacy.

The programme, themed “Young Leaders for Sustainable Environment”, was launched via Zoom with participants aged 13 to 25 joining from across the country.

Speaking at the virtual opening ceremony, Programme Coordinator Lasisi Adedoyin stated that the camp is designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and tools to lead community-driven environmental change.

“This week, the 2025 cohort will have the opportunity to build the skills and connections that will drive positive change in their communities,” said Adedoyin.

Participants will engage in interactive workshops, field excursions, and sustainability advocacy training, all aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

• SDG 4 – Quality Education
• SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities
• SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption & Production
• SDG 13 – Climate Action
• SDG 15 – Life on Land

The boot camp is sponsored by Gracefield Island and partnered with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and Centre for 21st Century Issues.

Gaji Omobolaji, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, represented by Ilori Temitope, applauded the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s support.

“We must actively include youths in shaping solutions, driving climate action and championing the course,” said Omobolaji.

He added that the programme aligns with the Lagos State T.H.E.M.E.S.+ development agenda, which emphasises inclusivity and sustainability in governance.

Adedoyin reiterated ÈKÓ EnviroTalk’s mission to demystify environmental issues through science communication and grassroots action.

“We’re nurturing a generation of sustainability leaders through programmes like this summer camp, creative competitions, and youth empowerment initiatives,” he said.

The camp aims to inspire participants to take ownership of climate action in their communities and develop tangible solutions for the environmental challenges facing Lagos and beyond.

From plastic pollution to flooding and extreme weather, Nigeria—like many nations—is grappling with the consequences of climate change.

But amid these challenges, young people are emerging as powerful advocates for the planet.

This initiative by ÈKÓ EnviroTalk highlights the growing role of youth leadership in climate action, providing them with the tools to transition from awareness to action.
