Sonnex Rpet sustainability partnership with LBS empowers future leaders in waste recycling while promoting circular economy and tackling Nigeria’s plastic crisis

Sonnex Rpet sustainability partnership with Lagos Business School (LBS) is setting a new standard for sustainable waste management and leadership development in Nigeria.

As the country grapples with over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, less than 15% of which is recycled, Sonnex Rpet has teamed up with the LBS Sustainability Centre to bridge academic knowledge with industry innovation.

This partnership aims to train the next generation of sustainability-focused leaders through experiential learning.

Recently, participants from the programme visited Sonnex Rpet’s recycling facility in Ikorodu, Lagos, where they witnessed how plastic waste is transformed into high-quality recycled materials through advanced bottle-to-bottle PET processing technology.

At the core of the model is Sara Rpet, Sonnex Packaging Nigeria’s waste management arm, which has become a shining example of circular economy in action.

With over 10,000 metric tonnes of PET bottles processed in its first year, the company has created jobs for more than 4,000 Nigerians and built strong community-based waste collection networks.

“Academic institutions play a crucial role in developing Nigeria’s next generation of sustainability leaders,” said Anil Mohinani, MD of Business Development at Mohinani Group.

“This collaboration opens doors for knowledge exchange and future workforce readiness.”

Participants explored collector empowerment initiatives, environmental practices, and scalable waste-to-resource systems that combine business growth with environmental stewardship.

Oreva Atanya, Director of the LBS Sustainability Centre, emphasized the importance of such collaborations in her remarks:

“Sara Rpet’s operational success proves that environmental sustainability and business excellence can go hand-in-hand. This model supports critical sectors like food, beverage, packaging, and solid waste management.”

She added that the initiative aligns with the school’s mission to develop responsible African business leaders.

Plans are already underway to deepen the partnership with joint research projects, student case studies, and innovation forums.

This powerful collaboration is not only reshaping sustainability education but also offering a scalable, impactful solution to Africa’s escalating waste problem.
