Enugu child death arrest sparks outrage as police detain a woman over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter

The Enugu State Government on Monday confirmed the arrest of Ogechi John over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John, in Enugu East Local Government Area.

According to a statement published on the WhatsApp media platform of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, the suspect, an indigene of Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested on Monday morning by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.

The arrest followed the death of the child, who was allegedly beaten to death at the family residence located in Nchatancha, Emene, in Enugu East Local Government Area.

Neighbours reportedly told authorities that the tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Residents in the area also alleged that Amanda John had repeatedly suffered severe maltreatment from the suspect before the fatal incident.

Reacting to the development, Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, said the government would ensure that the suspect faced the full weight of the law.

“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. We swung into action immediately upon learning of this tragedy to ensure the suspect was arrested,” Ngozi Enih said.

The commissioner stressed that the state government would closely monitor the legal process to ensure a swift and thorough investigation into the case.

“We will be pressing for a thorough and expedited investigation to ensure that justice is not just done, but done really fast. Nobody should take another’s life, and certainly not the life of any child in Enugu State. We condemn it in totality,” she added.

The Enugu State Government reiterated its strong commitment to protecting children and warned that individuals found guilty of child abuse or violence would face prosecution.

Authorities confirmed that Ogechi John remains in police custody while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The statement, however, did not specify the police division responsible for the arrest or the exact location where the suspect is being detained.
