FIFA introduces debut patches for first-time players at the 2026 World Cup, linked to a new Fanatics collectible trading card system

Players making their first appearance at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 will wear special debut patches on their shirts as part of a new collectibles initiative introduced by FIFA in partnership with Fanatics.

The innovative system will see global stars such as Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal receive commemorative patches during their first tournament appearances, marking a symbolic milestone in their international careers.

According to reports from BBC Sport, the initiative also means that all players in the Scotland squad could be classified as World Cup debutants if selected for the tournament.

Under the arrangement, patches worn during debut matches will be removed after games and transformed into collectible Topps trading cards, creating a new layer of memorabilia for football fans worldwide.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 debut patch system forms part of a broader licensing agreement that will see Fanatics replace Panini as FIFA’s official trading card and sticker partner from 2031.

Although the final design of the debut patch has not yet been revealed, the concept closely mirrors an existing system used in Major League Soccer, where debut patches are attached to players’ kits before their first appearance.

In the MLS model, the patches are later removed, embedded into trading cards, and distributed in collectible hobby boxes, with some editions featuring player signatures.

FIFA has not confirmed whether autograph versions will be included in the World Cup edition.

Because the Fanatics agreement officially begins in 2031, products linked to the 2026 and 2030 tournaments are expected to be released after the contract fully takes effect.

The 2026 tournament is expected to generate more than 600 debut cards due to its expanded format, with several nations making their first-ever World Cup appearances.

Countries such as Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan are set for historic debuts, while nations including Austria, Norway, Paraguay, Scotland and Turkey are returning after long absences.

Others, including Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ivory Coast, will also return to the global stage after a 12-year absence, with squads expected to feature several first-time World Cup players.

The development adds a new commercial and emotional layer to the tournament, blending sport with memorabilia in a move expected to excite collectors and fans alike.
