A fuel station fire in Iju Ishaga, Lagos, was brought under control after an explosion triggered a blaze. Emergency responders swiftly contained the incident

Fuel station fire in Iju Ishaga broke out on Wednesday afternoon following a loud explosion that sent shockwaves through the Obawole area along Old Akute Road in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the fire, which erupted at approximately 4 pm, triggering panic among residents and passers-by in the K Farms Estate vicinity.

Eyewitnesses described a sudden blast, believed to have originated from underground fuel tanks, which quickly engulfed the entire facility. The fire reportedly started from a building located behind the station before spreading.

Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed the emergency, stating: “Our people are on ground, seems the fire started from a building behind the filling station.”

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service immediately deployed personnel to the site, swiftly cordoning off the station to facilitate a secure containment operation and prevent public interference.

According to the agency’s spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, firefighters successfully contained the blaze before it could reach nearby properties. By 6 pm, emergency responders had stabilised the situation, securing the affected area to avoid further risk.

The quick and coordinated response of emergency teams has been credited with averting what could have been a much larger disaster in the densely populated area.
