Denmark and Sweden had submitted a joint bid while Poland also vied to stage the tournament.

Italy and Portugal withdrew their bids before the vote to focus on co-hosting the 2032 men’s Euro and the 2030 men’s World Cup, respectively.

“All the presentations and all the bids were great but there is only one winner, in football as in life,” Ceferin said.

Germany previously hosted the tournament in 2001 and, as West Germany, in 1989, winning the competition on both occasions.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf hailed the decision as a triumph for the German Football Association.

“It was a long journey. We have so many people working at DFB to get this tournament. Thanks to all who supported us, we felt this support throughout the campaign,” Neuendorf said.

Ahead of the executive committee meeting, a group of activists unfurled a banner demanding UEFA ban Israel from European competition over its military operations in Gaza, setting off pink flares.

Police oversaw the demonstration, and no incidents were reported.
