Goodness Nwachukwu discus gold victory at Glasgow 2026 comes with a world record throw as Nigeria celebrates another Commonwealth Games triumph

Goodness Nwachukwu, Nigeria’s defending champion in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus event, delivered a record-breaking performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning gold and setting a new world record.

Nwachukwu produced her best effort in the final round of the competition, recording a throw of 39.66 metres to surpass her previous F42 world record by more than three metres and secure Nigeria’s seventh gold medal at the Games.

The outstanding performance reinforced Nwachukwu’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading para-athletes and marked another memorable moment in the country’s growing success at the competition.

Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye claimed the silver medal after throwing 38.52 metres, while compatriot Bree Cronin completed the podium with a season’s best effort of 36.00 metres.

Nwachukwu’s triumph added to Nigeria’s impressive showing in Glasgow, where the country has continued to collect medals across multiple sporting events.

Team Nigeria also celebrated success in the women’s shot put event, with Jessica Oji winning silver after recording a throw of 17.87 metres.

The latest results helped Nigeria strengthen its position on the overall medals table. At the end of the day’s events, Team Nigeria sat in fifth place with a total of 14 medals, comprising seven gold, five silver and two bronze.

Nwachukwu’s record-breaking display further highlighted the strength of Nigeria’s para-athletics programme, following a series of strong performances by the country’s athletes on the international stage.
