Team Nigeria Glasgow 2026 campaign ends with seventh place finish and 24 medals, making Nigeria Africa’s best-performing nation at the Games

Team Nigeria finished seventh on the final medal table at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, delivering a strong performance that saw the West African nation emerge as Africa’s highest-ranked country at the multi-sport event.

The campaign produced 24 medals across 10 sports, including 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, marking another impressive showing by Nigerian athletes on the Commonwealth stage.

Nigeria’s medal charge was highlighted by outstanding individual performances across para powerlifting, athletics and field events, with several athletes achieving remarkable milestones throughout the competition.

Esther Nworgu secured Nigeria’s first gold medal of the Games with a dominant display in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, setting the tone for the country’s successful outing.

Ezekiel Nathaniel added to Nigeria’s gold medal tally by winning the men’s 400-metre hurdles, while Goodness Nwachukwu delivered a memorable performance in the women’s F42 discus throw by breaking her own world record on her way to gold.

Idris Rilwan also claimed gold in the men’s para powerlifting event, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history in the men’s shot put, further strengthening Nigeria’s presence in the athletics events.

The performances reflected the depth of Nigeria’s sporting talent across both able-bodied and para-sport competitions, with athletes producing moments of excellence that captured national attention.

Australia topped the final medal standings with 65 gold, 41 silver and 52 bronze medals, securing overall victory at the Games.

England finished second with 26 gold, 41 silver and 35 bronze medals, while Canada placed third with 18 gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Nigeria’s seventh-place finish represented a significant achievement given the level of competition among Commonwealth nations and reinforced the country’s position as one of Africa’s leading sporting forces.
