Team Nigeria secures two more qualifications for the World Athletics Championships in Beijing after strong performances at the 2026 World Relays in Botswana

Team Nigeria has secured two additional qualification slots for the 2026 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, following the final day of the World Athletics Relays.

Team Nigeria World Athletics Relays qualification boost came in the Mixed 4×400m and women’s 4×100m events, bringing the country’s total to three secured tickets.

In the Mixed 4×400m race, the quartet of Samson Nathaniel, Taiwo Kudoro, Chidi Okezie, and Patience Okon-George delivered a strong performance, finishing second with a Season’s Best time of 3:12.88 to earn automatic qualification.

In the women’s 4×100m category, the team of Chigozie Rosemary, Obi Jennifer Chukwuka, Maria Thompson, and Miracle Ezechukwu clocked 42.94 seconds to finish second behind France in the repechage heat.

The women’s team had earlier missed automatic qualification due to a baton exchange error on the first day but recovered strongly to secure their place in Beijing.

However, Nigeria’s men’s 4×400m team failed to qualify, finishing third in the repechage with a time of 3:01.43.

Overall, Team Nigeria secured three out of a possible six relay tickets at the championship event held in Botswana.
