D’Tigress performance in WNBA warm-up series, Nigeria review as NBBF hails progress despite losses to Minnesota Lynx and other US teams

Babs Ogunade, Vice President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), has defended the performances of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their back-to-back defeats against WNBA opposition during their United States tour ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

D’Tigress US tour against WNBA teams review comes after the team narrowly lost 88–79 to the Minnesota Lynx in their second warm-up fixture, extending their run to two defeats in the preparatory series.

Ogunade said the results should be viewed within the broader context of long-term development, stressing that the federation deliberately scheduled matches against elite opposition to strengthen the squad ahead of major international competitions.

He noted that the focus is not solely on match outcomes but on exposing the team to high-level competition that will sharpen their readiness for the global stage.

“We pitted our team against quality opposition in the WNBA. We are encouraged by the results. Our eyes are on the ball and not the results from these preparatory games,” he said.

NBBF vice president highlighted the blend of youth and experience within the current squad, describing it as part of an ongoing rebuilding process aimed at sustaining long-term competitiveness.

He explained that more than 20 players have featured for D’Tigress since 2017, with continuous adjustments expected based on form and performance.

Ogunade also reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to gradual improvement, stating that squad development remains a priority as preparations intensify for the FIBA World Cup in Germany.

“There’s always a mix of experience and youth intertwined… We shall continue to tweak the team based on their current forms ahead of the FIBA World Cup in Germany,” he added.

Despite the defeat, D’Tigress showed noticeable improvement against the Minnesota Lynx, displaying greater cohesion and competitive balance throughout the contest.

Nigerian side edged ahead 42–38 in the second quarter, demonstrating improved offensive rhythm and defensive structure before the WNBA outfit’s experience ultimately proved decisive in the closing stages.

Captain Ezinne Kalu led the Nigerian effort with an impressive 25-point performance, combining leadership with consistent scoring threat, while Gabby Williams contributed 16 points and strong support across key phases of the game.

For Minnesota, Courtney Williams top-scored with 17 points, while rookie Olivia Miles delivered an all-round performance with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Although D’Tigress remain winless on the tour, officials and observers have pointed to improved ball movement, defensive organisation and resilience against top-tier opposition as encouraging signs of progress.

The team will now turn attention to their next fixture against the Indiana Fever on 2 May, a further test as they continue preparations for the forthcoming World Cup campaign.
