Ibadan North by-election candidates sign peace accord with INEC and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, credible, and transparent poll on August 16

The Ibadan North by-election candidates contesting in Oyo State’s August 16 vote have signed a peace accord, pledging to ensure a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent process.

The signing took place at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) State Headquarters in Ibadan, with Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr Adeniran Tella and Oyo State Commissioner of Police Femi Aruna witnessing the agreement.

Representatives from the Nigeria Army, NSCDC, DSS, NDLEA, and NOA were also in attendance.

Tella said the accord was designed to create a conducive atmosphere for voters to freely exercise their rights, enhancing the legitimacy and credibility of the electoral process. He noted that candidates from five political parties signed the document:

* Akin Alamu – African Democratic Party (ADC)
* Haastrup Olatunji – All Progressive Congress (APC)
* Olabisi Odususi – All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA)
* Sunday Oyekunle – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
* Hammed Badmus – Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)

The REC urged candidates to abide by the agreement and avoid any form of voter intimidation on election day.

He confirmed that non-sensitive materials had been delivered to the local government area and that 526 BVAS machines with 48 backups had been configured for the poll. Results will be uploaded via the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) on election day.

The by-election will be conducted across 512 polling units, with 272,196 registered voters expected to participate.

APC candidate Olatunji commended INEC and security agencies for their readiness, while PDP candidate Oyekunle urged the commission to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election.

The Ibadan North by-election peace accord represents a joint commitment by political actors, electoral officials, and security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process in Oyo State.
