Stop-and-search operation in Aguda leads to seizure of guns, suspected cannabis and a manhunt for an alleged accomplice

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 22-year-old suspect during a routine stop-and-search operation in Aguda, recovering firearms, ammunition and substances suspected to be cannabis in an operation that has triggered a wider manhunt for an alleged accomplice.

The Lagos Police Firearms Recovery operation took place along Adetola Road in the Aguda area of the state, where officers intercepted Olamide Suleiman during routine patrols.

According to the police, a search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Officers subsequently searched his bag and allegedly found a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge.

During interrogation, Suleiman reportedly told investigators that the recovered pistol belonged to a man identified only as Emir, who was said to be staying at a hotel in Aguda.

Acting on the information, police operatives immediately proceeded to the hotel to verify the claim.

The command said a search of the room allegedly occupied by the suspect led to the recovery of a double-barrel gun, although the principal suspect escaped before officers arrived.

Police said investigations have continued while efforts have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspect and identify other members of the alleged criminal gang.

Commenting on the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, commended the officers for their vigilance and swift response, describing the recovery as another step in the command’s ongoing campaign against violent crime and the proliferation of illegal firearms.

Fatai reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring that criminal elements do not find safe haven in Lagos, urging residents to continue partnering with law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence.

He encouraged members of the public to remain alert and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency response lines.

The arrest comes amid sustained security operations by the Lagos State Police Command, including intelligence-led raids, stop-and-search patrols and targeted interventions aimed at disrupting criminal networks, recovering illegal weapons and improving public safety across the state.
