Maryam Muhammed, a 12-year-old Nigerian swimmer, wins multiple medals at the African School Games and dreams of representing Nigeria at the Olympics

Maryam Muhammed is only 12, but she is already swimming her way into Nigeria’s sporting history.

At the inaugural African School Games held in Lagos in October, the British International School pupil emerged as one of the standout athletes, collecting three gold, four silver, and one bronze medal.

“It feels amazing,” Maryam told PUNCH Sports Extra, her calm voice belying her years. “All the hard work and support from my parents, coaches, and friends are paying off.”

Although she also claimed a medal in the girls’ 800m race, the pool remains her true home. “Swimming is my favourite,” she said. “I started when I was about four. I stopped for a while because I wasn’t consistent, but I still trained whenever I could.”

Her serious return to swimming began at 10, and since then she has surged forward with purpose.

At the African Zone 2 Championships in Ghana, competing against swimmers aged 14 to 18, she earned six bronze medals — a remarkable feat for the youngest competitor at the event.

“Despite her age, Maryam competed fiercely and contributed to Nigeria’s team medals,” said Mr Taiwo Oriss, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation.

Before that, she shone for Team Lagos at the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, winning four gold medals.

She also starred at the National U-15 Swimming Championship in Abuja, helping Lagos secure the top spot on the medals table with 44 podium finishes.

Behind Maryam’s growing success is a devoted circle of mentors, coaches, and family. Her mother, Khadijat Muhammed, said watching her daughter compete fills her with pride.

“Her dedication and composure make every early morning and every sacrifice worthwhile,” she said.

Maryam draws her inspiration from Katie Ledecky, the American swimming icon and multiple Olympic champion. “She’s so focused and determined,” Maryam said. “Whatever she sets her mind to, she achieves it.”

That same drive fuels Maryam’s biggest dream — to represent Nigeria at the Olympic Games. “I see myself at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, winning medals for Nigeria,” she said with youthful conviction.

Her parents remain realistic but resolute. “It takes a lot — time, effort, and resources,” her mother added. “But seeing her growth, confidence, and sportsmanship makes it worth every bit.”
