Victor Boniface says his goal for the 2025/26 season at Werder Bremen is to stay fit and help the team, hoping to regain his Leverkusen form

Victor Boniface says his main focus for the 2025/26 season is to stay fit and help Werder Bremen achieve success as he looks to rediscover the form that once made him one of the Bundesliga’s brightest forwards.

The 24-year-old joined Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen on loan during the summer transfer window but has struggled to settle at the Weser Stadion since his move on deadline day.

Now in his third season in Germany’s top flight, the Nigerian forward has yet to replicate the outstanding numbers from his debut campaign with Leverkusen, when he scored 14 goals and provided eight assists in just 24 league appearances — a key contribution to the club’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga title win in 2023/24.

Injuries, however, have hampered his progress. Boniface admits that staying fit is his top priority this term. “For me, personally, my goal is to try to play the whole season without injury,” he told SABC Sports.

“When I signed here, I made it clear that I don’t set statistical targets — I just want to help the team and stay injury-free.”

He added that his focus remains on the collective rather than individual glory. “Football is like life — sometimes you have good moments, sometimes bad ones,” he said.

“It’s not about me scoring; it’s about the team’s results. I can be scoring and we’re losing — I don’t want that. I want us to win, and when we start winning, the goals will come.”

Boniface has so far provided two assists in eight league games for Bremen, who sit eighth in the Bundesliga with 15 points from 10 matches.

Having lost his place in the Super Eagles squad earlier in the year, the striker hopes a strong run of form after the international break will earn him a recall.

Bremen resume their league campaign away to RB Leipzig, where Boniface will be keen to show glimpses of his early Leverkusen brilliance.
