National School Volleyball Championship Lagos begins at Teslim Balogun Stadium, with young athletes competing for national honours and global spots

The Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos has officially opened hostilities for the second edition of the National School Volleyball Championship, as hundreds of young athletes from across Nigeria compete for national honours and international recognition.

The Volleyball event began on Monday, bringing together schools from multiple states for a four-day competition designed to strengthen grassroots volleyball development.

The tournament is jointly organised by the Nigeria School Sport Federation and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, with support from the Lagos State Sports Commission.

The competition aims to promote volleyball within the school system while identifying emerging talents capable of representing Nigeria at international tournaments.

Scouts and technical officials from the Nigeria Volleyball Federation are present at the venue to evaluate players throughout the championship.

Participating teams include representatives from Lagos, Osun, Rivers, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Ogun, Taraba and Bauchi states, among others, all competing in both boys’ and girls’ categories.

Nigeria School Sport Federation president Olabisi Joseph expressed satisfaction with the growing enthusiasm for volleyball in schools, describing the development as a positive step for youth sports.

She noted that sports participation plays a vital role in building discipline, teamwork and academic development among students.

Olabisi Joseph also confirmed that standout performers from the Lagos edition will be considered for selection ahead of the International School Sport Federation World School Volleyball Championship scheduled for July in China.

The maiden edition of the tournament was held in Abuja, where host teams claimed both boys’ and girls’ titles, with selected players later representing Nigeria at the global level.
