PalmPay youth data protection training to reach 1 million Nigerians in 3 years, boosting digital safety in partnership with Youth Ministry

PalmPay youth data protection training has officially launched in partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Youth Development, aiming to equip over one million young Nigerians with essential knowledge on data privacy and digital safety over the next three years.

The initiative, unveiled at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, is designed to help youths navigate the digital space securely—at a time when they make up more than 70% of Nigeria’s population.

Organisers emphasized that building digital trust is vital to sustaining innovation and protecting users in Africa’s fastest-growing digital economy.

“This is about building a privacy-first generation—one that is inclusive, future-facing, and globally competitive,” said Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande.

He also pointed to the low public awareness of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, enacted in 2023, and the country’s urgent need for certified Data Protection Officers.

With over 500,000 data controllers across Nigeria, the gap in qualified talent presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

PalmPay’s Managing Director, Chika Nwosu, said the fintech company takes privacy seriously—baking in user protections at every stage of product development.

“Data protection is as important as innovation in tech,” Nwosu stated. “Our goal is to ensure user information remains safe while empowering youths with the skills they need to thrive.”

The programme will go beyond training. It includes mentorship and internship placements for top performers, expanding PalmPay’s already strong track record with youth empowerment through initiatives like the Purple Woman campaign and Passing the Baton CSR series.

Organisers confirmed that the training will expand into northern Nigeria and be scaled nationally, supporting a broader mission to enhance digital literacy and prepare Nigeria’s youth for a future driven by technology.
