Ola Aina Nigeria switch as the Super Eagles defender reveals family influence and identity shaped his decision to choose Nigeria over England

Nigeria international defender Ola Aina, a Nottingham Forest full-back, has given a detailed account of his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria, highlighting family influence and personal identity as the key factors behind what he described as a deeply meaningful choice.

Aina, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, progressed through England’s youth system from Under-16 to Under-20 level and also featured for the Under-21 side.

Despite initially appearing to be on a clear pathway towards a senior England call-up, the opportunity to represent the Three Lions at competitive level ultimately did not materialise.

The turning point came in March 2017 when Aina accepted an invitation to train with Nigeria’s senior national team in London, a moment he now regards as decisive in shaping his international career.

Speaking on the switch, Aina explained that his heritage played a central role in his decision, describing it as a natural and positive step aligned with his roots.

“Born and raised in London, I decided to play for Nigeria. It was just a decision that I made when I was about 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my origin,” he said.

“The opportunity came for me and I thought it was the right one at that time, so I took it with both hands, and I’m here today.”

Due to his previous appearances for England at youth level, Aina required FIFA clearance before completing the switch, which was eventually granted ahead of his senior debut for Nigeria in a 2017 World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

The defender also reflected on the pride his family derives from his international career, noting that representing the Super Eagles carries strong emotional significance beyond football.

“My family are very proud of me, especially when I wear the Super Eagles shirt. They love it more than me. Even for me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honour,” he added.

Since committing to Nigeria, Aina has established himself as a consistent figure in the national team setup, contributing to Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and their runners-up finish in 2023, where he was included in the tournament’s Team of the Tournament.

At club level, the defender continues to play a key role for Nottingham Forest, who are currently enjoying a strong European campaign and have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, where they will face Aston Villa in an all-English tie.
