The latest attention was drawn to Liverpool following reports that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had been approached about joining a consortium led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia in a proposed investment deal involving the club.

Although no agreement has been finalised, the potential move has renewed discussions about the changing ownership landscape of the Premier League and the growing appeal of English football to American billionaires and investment groups.

Liverpool are currently controlled by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), led by John W. Henry and Tom Werner. Any proposed investment is expected to involve a minority stake rather than a full takeover, with FSG remaining in overall control.

The development reflects a broader trend that has seen American ownership become increasingly prominent across the Premier League.

Among the clubs with major American involvement are some of the division’s biggest names, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Arsenal are owned by American businessman Stan Kroenke through Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which also has interests in major sports franchises in the United States.

Chelsea came under American ownership in 2022 after a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed the takeover of the club from Roman Abramovich. The ownership group has since invested heavily in rebuilding the squad and strengthening the club’s long-term structure.

Manchester United remain majority-owned by the Glazer family, who completed their takeover of the club in 2005. The family has maintained control despite years of supporter protests calling for a change in ownership.

Aston Villa’s ownership includes American billionaire Wes Edens, who is part of the V Sports ownership group alongside Egyptian businessman Nassef Sawiris.

Bournemouth are controlled by American businessman Bill Foley, whose investment group completed its takeover of the club in 2022.

Crystal Palace also have several American investors, including Woody Johnson, Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who hold stakes in the club.

Everton are owned by American businessman Dan Friedkin through The Friedkin Group, which completed its takeover after a lengthy ownership process.

Fulham remain under the ownership of Shahid Khan, the Pakistani-American businessman who also owns NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars.

Leeds United are backed by 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm linked to the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, which became the club’s majority owner after previously holding a minority stake.

The expanding American presence in English football reflects the Premier League’s global commercial appeal, with investors attracted by broadcast revenues, international audiences and the long-term growth potential of clubs.

However, the trend has also generated debate among supporters, with some welcoming increased financial strength while others remain cautious about foreign ownership and the commercial direction of traditional football institutions.
