Sesko Fires Manchester United to a vital 1-0 win at Everton, extending Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run and boosting top-four hopes

Benjamin Sesko fired Manchester United into the Premier League top four with a decisive 1-0 victory over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, extending head coach Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start in charge.

The Slovenian striker came off the bench to score the only goal 19 minutes from time, sealing a hard-fought win that lifts United three points clear of both Chelsea and Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification.

Sesko is yet to start in Carrick’s six matches in charge but has rediscovered sharp form following the dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim last month.

After scoring just twice in his first 22 appearances following a £74 million move from RB Leipzig, the 22-year-old has now struck six goals in his last seven games.

The winner emerged from a rare moment of quality in an otherwise subdued contest.

Sesko initiated the move deep inside his own half by laying the ball off to Matheus Cunha before racing forward to convert a perfectly weighted pass from Bryan Mbeumo.

United had shown little fluency for much of the afternoon. Both sides were playing for the first time in 13 days and struggled to find rhythm.

Jordan Pickford denied Amad Diallo inside two minutes in the clearest chance of a cagey first half.

Mbeumo, preferred in the central role ahead of Sesko, squandered a chance early in the second half when he fired over from a tight angle.

However, the Cameroon international redeemed himself with the assist that proved decisive.

Everton pressed late in search of an equaliser. Senne Lammens tipped over a powerful long-range effort from Michael Keane as the home side mounted a spirited rally.

The defeat extends Everton’s winless run at home to seven matches as David Moyes’s side continue to adapt to their new 52,000-capacity ground.

Everton missed the opportunity to climb to seventh and remain on the fringes of European contention.

Manchester United, by contrast, continue to gather momentum under Carrick.

After keeping just two clean sheets before Amorim’s departure, the team has recorded three in six matches under the former midfielder’s stewardship.
