Sweden sacks Jon Dahl Tomasson following a string of poor performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Swedish Football Association announced on Tuesday.

The decision to part ways with the Danish coach, who took charge of the national team in February 2024, comes after three consecutive defeats, including Monday night’s disappointing 1-0 home loss to Kosovo in Gothenburg.

Despite fielding attacking talents such as Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres and Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, Sweden have failed to score in their last three matches and now sit bottom of Group B, putting their qualification campaign in serious jeopardy.

FA President Simon Åström said in a statement:

“There is still a chance to make the playoffs in March, and our responsibility is to ensure that we have the best possible conditions for reaching the World Cup finals.”

The final blow came on Monday, when Kosovo’s Fisnik Asllani of Hoffenheim struck the decisive goal, silencing the home crowd and raising fresh concerns over Sweden’s tactical approach and morale.

Tomasson, a former Denmark international and respected figure in European football with past playing spells at AC Milan, Feyenoord, and Newcastle, failed to register a win in this qualifying campaign.

The Swedish FA confirmed that the search for a replacement would begin immediately, signalling a swift managerial reshuffle ahead of the crucial playoff window in March 2026.

While Tomasson’s tenure was initially met with optimism, especially given his reputation for attacking football, critics argue that his strategies have lacked cohesion and results when it mattered most.
