Tolu Bankole hails Reserved Seats for Women Bill, urging lawmakers to fast-track its passage and extend similar provisions to Persons With Disabilities

Reserved Seats for Women Bill has received strong backing from Tolu Bankole, a member of the All Progressives Congress National Working Committee.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Bankole joined rights advocates and political stakeholders in urging the swift passage of the landmark legislation.

The bill proposes the creation of 37 additional seats in the Senate, 37 in the House of Representatives, and three reserved seats per state in all 36 state assemblies exclusively for female candidates.

It is scheduled for a third reading in October before transmission to state assemblies and eventual presidential assent.

Bankole described the bill as “timely and reflective of the nation’s readiness,” highlighting the critical role of women in national development.

He said, “Women are the engine room of development. No women, no nation. Nigerian women are not only beautiful but also smart, responsive, caring, responsible, competent, and reliable.”

Noting the current underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s legislature—3.7 per cent of Senate seats and 3.9 per cent in the House of Representatives—Bankole emphasised that their inclusion would enrich decision-making, drive innovation, and strengthen democracy.

The APC chieftain also called for extending affirmative action to Persons With Disabilities, urging lawmakers to ensure their inclusion in the reserved seats initiative.

“Affirmative action for PWDs is not just an act of compassion but a national imperative to harness the skills and insights of millions of Nigerians who face systemic barriers,” he added.

Bankole highlighted the unique qualities women bring to leadership, including breaking stereotypes, offering diverse perspectives, demonstrating collaborative management, and serving as role models for future generations.

He urged legislators at all levels to pass the bill promptly, ensuring both women and PWDs benefit from the provisions.
