Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered a hamstring injury vs Marseille, but Xabi Alonso says the issue may not be as serious as first feared

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has provided a positive update on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury, saying the England international’s hamstring issue “may not be as bad as it seems.”

The right-back, who joined Madrid from Liverpool in a high-profile summer move, was forced off after just five minutes during Tuesday night’s Champions League opener against Marseille.

Trent appeared in obvious discomfort after a short sprint and immediately clutched the back of his left thigh.

He then dropped to the turf, signalling for medical assistance before being substituted by Dani Carvajal.

Carvajal would later receive a red card for a reckless challenge on Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, but despite going down to ten men, Madrid managed to hold on for a 2-1 win thanks to a brace of penalties from Kylian Mbappé.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Alonso reassured fans:

“We’ll wait a bit; maybe it’s not as bad as it seems,” the Real Madrid boss said.

The comment will come as a relief to both club and country, especially with England’s October international window and Madrid’s domestic campaign heating up.

This is not the first time Trent has struggled with injury since his switch to the Spanish capital.

In July, he was ruled out of Madrid’s Club World Cup final loss to PSG in the United States, also due to a muscle strain.

His latest issue now raises concerns over recurring fitness problems, though Alonso’s calm demeanour suggests Madrid’s medical staff are hopeful of a quick return.
