Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has agreed to join Al Ahli SC of Qatar from Al Kholood, signing a contract that runs until June 2028

Nigerian international defender William Troost-Ekong is set to begin a new chapter in his club career after agreeing a move to Qatari side Al Ahli SC from Saudi Pro League outfit Al Kholood.

The transfer, confirmed by multiple reliable sources including renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, will see the experienced centre-back sign a contract with Al Ahli SC until June 2028, highlighting the club’s long-term faith in the Super Eagles star.

Troost-Ekong joins the Qatari side following an impressive spell in Saudi Arabia, where he arrived at Al Kholood in August 2024.

Despite spending just one season at the club, the 32-year-old quickly established himself as a leader, earning the captain’s armband and becoming a central figure in the team.

His calmness, consistency and organisational skills at the heart of defence saw him emerge as one of Al Kholood’s standout performers.

Over the course of his stay, Troost-Ekong featured in 49 competitive matches, providing stability and experience as the club navigated the demands of top-flight football.

Those leadership qualities and his strong tactical awareness have now earned him a move to the Qatari league, where Al Ahli SC are keen to bolster their squad with proven experience.

The Netherlands-born Nigerian international has enjoyed a well-travelled club career, having played across several European leagues, including stints in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, England and Greece, before moving to the Middle East.

His adaptability across different football cultures has remained a defining feature of his career.

On the international stage, Troost-Ekong is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished defenders in recent years.

He captained the Super Eagles, earned over 80 international caps and played a key role in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaigns.

He officially retired from international football in late 2025 to focus fully on his club career.

For Al Ahli SC, the signing of Troost-Ekong is viewed as a major boost as the club looks to strengthen its squad with leadership, defensive solidity and professionalism ahead of upcoming domestic and continental challenges.
