A 56-year-old woman, Omowumi Sarat, appeared in an Ibadan Magistrates’ Court on charges of assaulting a man and stealing his tricycle valued at ₦1.2 million

A 56-year-old woman, Omowumi Sarat, was brought before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on Thursday, facing allegations of assaulting a man and subsequently stealing his tricycle.

Sarat, whose residential address was not provided to the court, is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, assault, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and stealing.

During her appearance in court, Sarat entered a plea of not guilty to all the charges brought against her.

According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Elisha Tellang, the alleged offences took place on January 4th at approximately 6:00 p.m. in the Moniya area of Ibadan.

Inspector Tellang informed the court that Sarat, along with other individuals who are currently still at large, “assaulted Mr Lateef Ganiyu by hitting him with their fists, which caused him harm on his lips and nostrils.”

He further alleged that the defendant “conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by preventing Mr Ganiyu’s tricycle from moving freely on the road.”

In addition to the assault and public order charges, the prosecution also accused Sarat of making away with the said tricycle, which has been valued at ₦1.2 million.

Inspector Tellang noted that the alleged offences are in contravention of Sections 516, 355, 249(d), and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Moyosore Atanda, granted Sarat bail in the sum of ₦200,000. The bail conditions also require Sarat to provide two credible sureties in the same amount.

The case has been adjourned until May 29th for a full hearing.
