Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League reaches semifinal stage as MFM, Dolphins, First Bank, and Royal Aces chase N7.5m prize in Lagos

The Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League has now reached its final four stage, with defending champions MFM, Dolphins, First Bank, and Royal Aces securing their spots in the semifinals of the 2025 season.

MFM bounced back strongly after their opening loss to Dolphins, sealing their place with a convincing 57–32 win over Titans.

That result gave them two wins from three games and kept their title defence alive.

Dolphins, meanwhile, stormed through the group stage unbeaten.

Their dominant 79–45 victory over Customs Women confirmed the latter’s elimination and underlined Dolphins’ intent to reclaim the championship. Customs lost all three of their games.

Royal Aces edged past Bayelsa Blue Whales with a tight 40–37 win to book their place, while basketball heavyweights First Bank also progressed, completing the semifinal line-up in what has become one of the most competitive editions yet.

With a renewed and increased prize pot of N7.5 million, stakes are higher than ever as teams prepare for the semifinal clashes scheduled to take place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Zenith Bank, sponsors of the league, expressed satisfaction with the level of competition and the growth of women’s basketball in Nigeria.

The Group Managing Director and CEO, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, confirmed her attendance at the final and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting women’s sports.

“This year’s edition has been very exciting. We expect a great final in Lagos and I believe fans will enjoy the skills to be exhibited by these players,” said Umeoji.

In a strong show of grassroots engagement, six schools were invited to watch Thursday’s matches live at the stadium.

The number is expected to rise to fifteen schools for the final, as part of the drive to inspire the next generation of female basketballers.
