Legal Action Against Ibom

Comfort Emmanson may take legal action against Ibom Air after her ordeal, but her lawyer says a decision is pending while she recovers from the incident

Legal action against Ibom Air is still on the table, according to Comfort Emmanson’s lawyer, Adefunke Maria, who disclosed that her client is yet to determine whether to sue the airline after her recent release from Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Maria criticized the conduct of the airline’s flight crew during the now-viral altercation that led to Emmanson’s arrest.

“She is a full-grown adult. If she is going to press civil charges for compensation, she will let us know,” the lawyer said.

Maria alleged that a flight attendant blocked Emmanson from disembarking after an Akwa Ibom–Lagos flight last Sunday, sparking the confrontation.

“On the way forward, whether Comfort will allow sleeping dogs lie, she will inform us. We can’t disclose that online,” Maria added, stressing that Emmanson needs time to recover.

The lawyer also condemned the alleged filming and online circulation of the incident by airline staff, describing it as unprofessional.

The incident, captured in viral videos, showed Emmanson in a heated scuffle with a crew member while security officials attempted to intervene.

Additional footage of Emmanson’s indecent exposure during the confrontation sparked public outrage and mixed reactions online.

While some Nigerians condemned her behaviour, others criticized the flight crew’s handling of the situation — particularly the decision to prevent her from exiting the aircraft.

Following the public backlash and Emmanson’s subsequent arraignment, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, intervened on August 13.

He ordered that the charges against her be dropped and called for her immediate release from custody.

He also directed the lifting of the lifetime flight ban earlier imposed on her by airline operators.

Despite her release, the incident continues to stir online debate, with many users urging Emmanson to pursue justice through legal means.

Maria, however, emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with her client.

“For now, she just needs to rest and put herself together,” Maria noted.
