Edo councillors impeach acting chairmen across 18 LGAs in a political shake-up to restore APC leadership after receiving Certificates of Return

Edo Councillors has Impeached Acting Chairmen just 24 hours after receiving their Certificates of Return, in a dramatic political shake-up across the 18 local government areas of Edo State.

Sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC) told our correspondent that the sweeping move was orchestrated to ensure loyal APC members regain control of the councils—some of which had been temporarily held by defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, eight councillors voted to impeach Acting Chairman Hon. Iradia Benjamin.

Meanwhile, in Esan West, Hon. Aigboboh, another acting chairman, tendered his resignation in an apparent attempt to preempt removal.

Monday’s swift developments followed Sunday’s official issuance of Certificates of Return to 59 elected councillors.

The new council members wasted no time asserting their mandate, signalling a clear desire to reverse any interim political arrangements made under the PDP-led state government.

Although full details are still unfolding, the actions suggest a broader strategic effort by the APC to consolidate power at the grassroots level, especially ahead of Edo’s 2024 gubernatorial elections.

An APC insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “This is not just about removing caretakers. It’s about restoring the people’s mandate and ensuring that the councils are governed by those truly aligned with the APC’s grassroots vision.”

While the PDP has yet to issue an official response, tensions are expected to rise as political control over the local governments shifts.

Analysts note that the move could reshape local governance dynamics in Edo, long regarded as a politically sensitive state.
