Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke grants amnesty to 36 convicts, promoting justice and rehabilitation to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary

Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has granted amnesty to 36 convicts across correctional centres in Ilesa and Ile-Ife to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The decision was announced on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in Osogbo.

The governor exercised powers under Section 212 of the Nigerian Constitution, following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

A proclamation dated September 24, 2025, officially remitted the remainder of sentences for the beneficiaries.

The amnesty covered 29 inmates at the Ilesa Correctional Centre and seven at the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre. Most of the released individuals were convicted of minor offences, including theft and conspiracy, and had served substantial portions of their terms.

Governor Adeleke described the move as a symbol of compassion, justice, and renewal. “As a government of the people, we remain committed to upholding justice while extending mercy to deserving citizens.

This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for true rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start for these individuals,” he said.

The proclamation instructed all relevant authorities to recognise the amnesty under the state’s official seal. Governor Adeleke emphasised that the initiative aims to foster social reintegration and ensure that ex-convicts contribute positively to society.

The released inmates included notable beneficiaries from Ilesa such as Kehinde Ganiyu, Isiaka Mohammed, Oluwatosin Femi, and Adebisi Adeniyi, while those from Ile-Ife included Yusuf Ola, Oyedeji Sunday, and Ojo Olaoluwa, among others.
