According to German outlet fussballdaten.de, Leverkusen are adopting a cautious but strategic approach towards the future of the 19-year-old playmaker following an impressive loan spell at VfL Bochum during the 2025/26 season.

The report stated that Leverkusen still regard Onyeka as part of their long-term plans after extending his contract until 2028 before sanctioning the temporary move to Bochum.

However, the Bundesliga champions are reportedly open to negotiations should a substantial offer arrive during the summer transfer window.

“Leverkusen are taking a careful and strategic approach regarding Onyeka’s future,” fussballdaten.de reported.

“They would begin negotiations at around €30m to €35m. While the club would prefer to sell abroad rather than strengthen a domestic rival, serious Bundesliga offers are expected to be considered.”

The report further noted that Leverkusen continue to view the midfielder as an important component of their future system despite growing transfer interest.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian father, Onyeka remains eligible to represent the Nigeria national football team at senior level despite featuring for Germany in youth competitions.

The teenager previously represented Germany during the qualification campaign for the 2024 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

Onyeka enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Bochum, where regular first-team opportunities accelerated his development and attracted attention from several top clubs.

Among the strongest admirers are RB Leipzig and FC Schalke 04.

Leipzig reportedly view Onyeka as a long-term development project in a mould similar to Xavi Simons and are believed to be preparing an offer worth around €25m plus performance-related bonuses.

The prospect of UEFA Champions League football is also said to be a major attraction for the player’s representatives.

Schalke, recently promoted back to the Bundesliga, are equally interested in securing the youngster’s signature and have reportedly explored several transfer structures with Leverkusen.

These include a loan deal with an option to buy as well as a permanent move containing a buy-back clause.

According to the report, Schalke hope the atmosphere at the Veltins-Arena and the promise of consistent first-team football could prove decisive in negotiations.
