Reports claim Enzo Maresca has reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City as speculation over Pep Guardiola’s long-term future continues

Former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City to become the club’s next manager, fuelling speculation about a possible succession plan at the Etihad Stadium.

According to multiple reports, Maresca has emerged as the preferred candidate to succeed current manager Pep Guardiola, with discussions said to have advanced significantly.

The reports claim an initial three-year contract is being prepared, although neither Manchester City nor Maresca has publicly confirmed the development.

Maresca, who previously worked within City’s coaching set-up before taking managerial roles elsewhere, is understood to be highly regarded by the club’s hierarchy.

His tactical philosophy and familiarity with City’s football structure have reportedly made him a leading contender should a managerial transition take place.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote on X that Maresca had reached a “total verbal agreement” with Manchester City and was expected to sign a three-year deal.

“Enzo Maresca has a total verbal agreement with Manchester City. Here we go! The Italian manager has always been considered the ideal candidate to replace Pep Guardiola,” Romano posted.

The reported development comes despite Guardiola recently dismissing suggestions that he is preparing to leave the Premier League champions.

Speaking ahead of City’s recent fixture, Guardiola reiterated that he remains under contract and committed to the club.

“I am here, I have a contract,” the Spaniard said while responding to questions about his future.

If eventually confirmed, Maresca’s appointment would mark one of the most significant managerial transitions in English football, bringing an end to Guardiola’s era and ushering in a new chapter for Manchester City.
