Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos has revealed a private message he received from Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães following the UEFA Champions League final last month, describing an emotional exchange between the two Brazilian internationals after PSG’s penalty shoot-out victory.

Post-Final message from Gabriel to Marquinhos revealed emerged during a press conference ahead of Brazil’s international friendly against Egypt, where the PSG defender reflected on the aftermath of the dramatic final and the personal support he offered to his compatriot on the pitch.

“A day later, I received a message from him thanking me for that moment, for the support, for the hug, and for the words I’d shared with him,” Marquinhos said.

The PSG captain also disclosed what he told Gabriel in an attempt to lift his spirits, praising the Arsenal defender’s performances throughout the season and urging him not to dwell on the penalty miss.

“I told him that, in my opinion, he was the best centre-back in the world this season. He simply didn’t deserve to carry that burden because, of course, we all want to score penalties,” Marquinhos explained.

The defender added that he reminded Gabriel of his importance to both club and country, stressing that one moment would not define an otherwise outstanding campaign.

“I told him that nothing about that moment would take away from the wonderful season he’d had and that we were going to need him very much,” he said.
