Two women have died and 20 people were injured after a tragic bus crash in the suburbs of Lisbon, Portugal, on July 7, 2026, according to local police and emergency officials.

The incident occurred in the western Sintra area of the Portuguese capital, where the victims were struck by a bus while waiting at a bus stop.

Francisco Alves, police chief for the western area of Sintra, confirmed that the two fatalities were women aged 30 and 40.

“The two victims were waiting for the bus when they were struck,” Alves told local media while providing details of the incident.

Emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene, providing medical assistance and psychological support to those affected by the crash.

Authorities said 20 people sustained injuries, including three victims who were reported to be in serious condition. Rescue teams worked to stabilise the injured and transport those requiring urgent care.

The incident has drawn reactions from Portuguese officials, including Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, who expressed sadness over the tragedy.

Montenegro described his reaction as one of “great dismay” and sent condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

“To the injured, my wishes for a swift and full recovery,” the prime minister wrote on X.
