Carolina Moreno birth story reveals how a Canadian mother unknowingly delivered her baby while asleep during labour before a dramatic discovery

Canadian mother Carolina Moreno has shared her extraordinary birth experience after unknowingly delivering her third child while asleep during labour at a hospital in 2026, describing the moment she discovered her newborn son beneath her blanket as one of the most frightening experiences of her life.

The 27-year-old mother from Canada revealed the unexpected delivery in a TikTok video that gained attention online, explaining that she was resting after receiving an epidural when her baby was born without her or her family immediately realising what had happened.

Moreno had been admitted for an induced labour after testing positive for Group B Streptococcus, a bacterial infection that can require antibiotics during delivery to reduce risks to a newborn. Medical staff began treatment before breaking her waters and continuing the induction process.

Unlike her earlier pregnancies, Moreno arrived at the hospital already three centimetres dilated with her cervix beginning to thin. Labour was later encouraged with Pitocin, a medication commonly used to strengthen contractions.

As contractions became increasingly uncomfortable, partly because the baby was not positioned ideally, Moreno requested an epidural. After initially feeling that the pain relief was not working, she received additional doses until she became comfortable enough to fall asleep.

Her husband, sister and cousin remained nearby in the delivery room as nurses continued monitoring the baby’s heartbeat. According to Moreno, the monitor alarm had sounded several times because her baby was moving frequently and changing position.

Speaking about the situation, Moreno explained that the repeated alarms did not immediately cause concern because similar interruptions had happened earlier.

“The alarm went off on the monitor, which happens when the heartbeat isn’t found, so my nurse came in to find it again,” Moreno told People.

“This had happened several times; my baby was very active and he liked to move,” she added.

However, as nurses struggled to locate the heartbeat, concern grew. Moreno recalled waking fully as medical staff asked her to change position while continuing their checks.

When she turned onto her back, a nurse noticed something unusual about her abdomen and the bed around her.

Moreno described the moment she felt something beneath the blankets as terrifying.

“I swear I thought it was gonna be like my placenta or my uterus had popped out. I never thought it was going to be my baby,” she said.

The nurse lifted the blanket and discovered Moreno’s newborn son lying face down on the bed. The baby was quiet and not crying, causing immediate alarm among everyone in the room.

“He’s face down. He’s not crying. And I just panic. I freak out,” Moreno recalled.

The medical team quickly picked up the baby and stimulated him until he responded and began crying. The newborn was found to be healthy despite the frightening circumstances.

Moreno said the experience was especially overwhelming because her husband believed he had missed the birth, only to discover that everyone in the room had been unaware the delivery had already happened.

“He thought he missed the birth. He just didn’t realise we all missed the birth,” she said.

Reflecting on the unusual delivery, Moreno explained that her son had essentially delivered himself while medical staff were still attempting to locate his heartbeat.

“The nurse didn’t deliver him; he delivered himself,” she said.

Three months after the birth, Moreno said her son is healthy, thriving and has brought joy to the family. She described him as their calmest child and believes his relaxed personality explains why he remained quiet immediately after arriving.

Although the moment was deeply distressing at the time, Moreno now views the experience as an unforgettable chapter in her family’s story, marked by fear, relief and the powerful emotions that can surround childbirth.
