The operation followed intelligence received by security agencies about the presence of kidnappers holding the victims in the forest, according to the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu.

Police operatives and local vigilantes subsequently mobilised to the area in an effort to locate and rescue the abducted persons.

The security team came under attack after entering the forest, triggering a gun battle with the suspected kidnappers.

“The hoodlums engaged the operatives in a gun duel, resulting in the neutralisation of two kidnappers while others escaped with gunshot injuries,” Iniedu said.

Two kidnapped victims were rescued during the operation and were found unharmed.

“The two kidnapped victims were successfully rescued unharmed,” the police spokesperson added.

The encounter, however, came at a heavy cost for the security team.

One vigilante member who participated in the operation sustained a gunshot injury during the exchange of fire and was later confirmed dead at a hospital.

“Regrettably, one vigilante sustained a fatal gunshot injury and was confirmed dead at the hospital,” Iniedu said.

The surviving suspects reportedly fled the scene with gunshot injuries as security operatives continued efforts to track them.

The development highlights the continuing risks faced by community-based security personnel working alongside conventional security agencies in operations against kidnapping networks.

The police said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri for further investigation.

The latest operation also underscores the importance of intelligence-led intervention in tackling kidnapping, particularly in forested areas that can provide hideouts for criminal groups.
