CISLAC urges National Assembly to focus on governance, reforms, and accountability in 2026, warning against election distractions

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has called on the 10th National Assembly to prioritise governance, accountability, and critical reforms as it resumes legislative duties for 2026.

In a statement on Monday, signed by Executive Director Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), the rights group warned that early electioneering ahead of the 2027 general election could undermine legislative focus and public confidence.

“2026 is a critical year for both the Tinubu administration and the legislature. Nigerians expect concrete results from policies introduced since 2023,” Rafsanjani said.

He cautioned that legislative productivity often declines in pre-election periods, noting that proposals to hold general elections as early as November 2026 could heighten public anxiety and weaken governance.

CISLAC highlighted Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, rising debt, and declining public trust as urgent issues that require a focused and accountable legislature rather than one distracted by political ambitions or perceived as a rubber stamp for the executive.

The organisation outlined key priorities for lawmakers, including sustained participation in plenary and committee sessions, expedited passage of electoral, economic, security, and governance reforms, and strengthened oversight of budget implementation, public procurement, and public funds.

Rafsanjani stressed that electoral reform remains a major public demand following the 2023 polls and should not be delayed.

He also urged legislators to maintain integrity, discipline, and a commitment to public interest ahead of the official campaign period.

CISLAC reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with the National Assembly and other stakeholders to advance reforms that strengthen democracy, accountability, and good governance in Nigeria.
