Jonathan Klinsmann neck injury confirmed after Cesena goalkeeper suffers cervical fracture in Serie B clash, ending his season early

AC Cesena goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann has suffered a serious neck injury following a heavy collision during a Serie B fixture against Palermo FC in Italy on Saturday, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Jonathan Klinsmann neck injury occurred during a league match in Italy’s second division, where the 29-year-old was stretchered off the pitch wearing a neck brace after an on-field clash with an opposing player.

He was immediately taken to a hospital in Palermo for urgent medical evaluation following the incident.

In an official statement, AC Cesena confirmed that initial scans revealed a fracture to Klinsmann’s first cervical vertebra, along with a laceration to the back of his head.

The club added that further specialist neurological assessments would be conducted to determine the full recovery process.

Klinsmann later updated supporters via social media, confirming that his playing season had come to an early end while expressing gratitude for the support received from fans, teammates, and family.

The Munich-born goalkeeper, son of former Germany international and coach Jürgen Klinsmann, has previously played in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy and has represented the United States at youth international level.

He was also included in the wider pool for the United States senior national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he did not feature in recent friendly matches against South Korea and Japan.

Since joining Cesena two years ago, Klinsmann has made over 50 appearances for the club, which is currently managed by former England international Ashley Cole.
