FG announces Lagos–Ibadan bridge closure for six weeks to repair expansion joints and improve safety along the busy expressway

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, has announced a six-week Lagos–Ibadan bridge closure to allow urgent rehabilitation of damaged expansion joints on key bridges along the expressway corridor.

The partial closure, which begins on Monday, will affect Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge. The works follow growing public complaints about traffic congestion and safety concerns linked to the deteriorating condition of the bridges.

Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, said the repairs became necessary after defects in the expansion joints posed serious risks to motorists and contributed to crashes on the route.

Komolafe apologised for the inconvenience and assured road users that improved traffic management plans would be implemented during the construction period.

Komolafe said the Minister of Works, David Umahi, approved the immediate resumption of the project due to the urgent safety implications.

He added that half of the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges had already been repaired, while the Ibadan-bound sections would now be addressed.

General Manager of CBC Construction Company, Andy Duan, confirmed that mobilisation of equipment would be completed over the weekend, with full work commencing on Monday.

Duan said part of the expansion joints at Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges had been completed, while half of the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge had also been fixed before earlier work was suspended to ease traffic.

Duan stated that safety installations, including warning signs, protective barriers, and signal lights, would be in place before traffic diversions begin to protect both motorists and construction workers.

Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kehinde Hamzat, assured road users that officers had been deployed to manage traffic flow.

Hamzat warned motorists against driving against traffic and urged patience and cooperation throughout the repair period.
