Morocco loses hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup final to Spain following AFCON 2025 controversies, but remains a key co-host of the tournament

Morocco has lost the chance to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, with Spain confirmed as the new venue, following controversies during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.

The decision was reported on Thursday, January 29, by international media outlets.

The North African nation, which co-hosts the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal, had been expected to stage the historic final, capitalising on its modern stadiums, infrastructure, and passionate fanbase.

However, the AFCON 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal was marred by on-field protests, touchline chaos, and unsporting behaviour, drawing global criticism.

FIFA and the co-hosting committees reportedly reassessed Morocco’s readiness to host a match of such magnitude after the incidents, which were described by analysts as damaging to the reputation of world football.

Spain confirmed as final host

Rafael Louzán, President of the Spanish Football Federation, confirmed Spain’s hosting role for the 2030 World Cup final.

“The final will be played here. Spain has demonstrated its organisational capacity. We have seen scenes during the African Cup final that hurt the image of world football,” Louzán told BBC Sports.

The decision reflects FIFA’s priority on safety, professionalism, and the global reputation of the tournament.

Morocco remains a key co-host

Despite losing the final, Morocco will continue to stage several matches, showcasing its new stadiums, fan culture, and organisational expertise.

Football analysts noted that co-hosting still provides a significant platform for Morocco to strengthen its global football credentials and demonstrate lessons learned from AFCON 2025.

CAF has already issued sanctions against Morocco and Senegal over the events during the AFCON final, in which Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 after extra time.

Observers say Morocco must now focus on delivering a disciplined and flawlessly run tournament to safeguard its reputation ahead of 2030.
