Police disburse N2.4bn insurance to families of fallen officers, covering multiple years and clearing outstanding claims

The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed over N2.4bn in insurance benefits to 1,075 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased officers, marking a significant step in ongoing welfare reforms.

The cheques were presented on Wednesday by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, during a ceremony at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the total sum of N2,435,421,584.11 covers multiple policy years, including 2018 to 2026, as well as outstanding claims recovered from previous periods.

The disbursement was made under the Group Life Assurance Scheme and the IGP Family Welfare Scheme, reflecting renewed efforts to address long-standing delays in benefit payments.

Speaking at the event, the Force Insurance Officer, Lydia Ameh, said the payment demonstrates a strengthened commitment to prioritising the welfare of officers and their families.

Lydia Ameh noted that the exercise also represents the clearance of backlog obligations, adding that new measures have been introduced to ensure compliance by insurance providers and prevent future delays.

In his remarks, Olatunji Disu described the occasion as a solemn but powerful recognition of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, emphasising that welfare remains a core priority of his leadership.

He said the initiative goes beyond financial assistance, serving as a meaningful commitment to honour fallen personnel while providing sustained support to their families.

The Inspector-General further pledged to enhance welfare systems through improved administrative processes and the adoption of modern technology to boost transparency and accountability.

He added that efforts would be intensified to streamline claims processing and eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks that have historically affected timely disbursement.
